After visiting the Camargue region in southern France earlier this year, I found myself feeling really grateful. That day I had rode a white horse through the marshlands to the beach. This peaceful yet stirring environment brought about nostalgia for my late partner. The day spent riding those horses was bittersweet as it was something soley felt, rather than shared with the person I miss the most. I envisioned seeing him one day and telling him everything I experienced with him in my heart.
'Nights in Provence'

I feel like the beauty of Provence is made even more special because everything is framed by an archway. Arched structures from bridges, crypts, aqueducts and doorways become another opportunity to take in the view.
The ochre city nested under a seemingly un-polluted inky black sky is like a warm honey pot, a night full of potential.

Aix en Provence ochre buildings sing during the day under the sunlight and at night glow from candlelit dinners and festoon lighting. What I love about France is its appreciation for detail and beauty in every corner of sight.
'Sunset at Pont du Gard'

Visiting Pont du Gard was the last stop on our roadtrip through the Provence region. Pont du Gard is an aqueduct which used to carry water to the city of Nîmes.
My friend Maya and I spent the afternoon walking across the bridge and watching the light stream through each arch.

Last year I was lucky enough to attend the artist residency at Chateau Orquevaux in the French countryside. I was joined by 25 other artists from around the world and we all became fast friends.
Everything about the residency felt like a sacred ritual. The shared meals, the late night studio confessionals, the reverence around the artists' practice... and the wine, it all felt spiritual somehow.
There is an epic church in town, which is wild considering only 50 people live in Orquevaux. One morning we all went to visit. This painting tries to capture the light inside.

'Calissons' are a French candy I fell in love with when I was visiting the south of France. Little almond-shaped melon flavoured drops of goodness. Many moons ago, during a historic plague, calissons were blessed in churches and given out as symbols of joy and protection. This tradition is still maintained in Aix-en-Provence every September.
Pleasure and indulgence for me can come with a lot of guilt. The belief that sweetness has to be earned before it can be deserved. Learning about these calissons and their joyous, spiritual meaning freed me from that. P.S. If you ever find yourself in a relationship with someone who oversees every sweet you have, I sincerely hope you dump him :)

My travels in France had left me dizzy with ideas. I had a dream where I was standing up on a really high chair looking down and there were fish swimming around the legs.
I was so excited by this flood of inspiration but at the same time too scared to take the leap of bringing these ideas to life.

My time at the residency made my mind brim with new ideas and inspiration. Sometimes procrastination and doubt would seep in and the work would stay stuck in my head and not transfer to canvas.
During my time in France I noticed the people tend to prioritize enjoyment. I often wondered how a city so beautiful got anything done. So now a vital part of my process is enjoying the dessert.
'Crème Éclipse'

I started this piece as an ode to a fresco advertisement I saw in France that read; ‘Crème Éclipse’. Something about that word combo I really liked…delicious and magic at the same time.
During my time at the residency, I was going through a sort of identity crisis/creative block (heaps of feelings as per usual…are you surprised?)
I came good around day 7 and then the work poured out of me. It was a full moon that night too if you’re into that kinda thing.
Anyway! This painting marked my decision to switch from painting with my head and to paint from my heart instead.
I later got my friend Alice to translate the other words that were on that fresco ad. Turns out it was an ad for a shoe polish brand; ‘Crème Eclipse’. But I prefer my translation.
